Cress Broad-Leaved (Lepidium sativum)
Ready in days: Fastest salad green from seed to harvest
Peppery bite: Similar to watercress
Windowsill crop: Grow indoors year-round
The Instant Gratification Green
Garden cress is the fastest vegetable you can grow – ready to eat in just 7-14 days from sowing. No vegetable delivers quicker results. It is perfect for teaching children about growing food and for impatient gardeners everywhere.
The Peppery Flavor
Cress has a sharp, peppery flavor similar to watercress or arugula. A little goes a long way. It adds punch to mild salads and sandwiches. The classic British egg and cress sandwich features this sharp little green.
Growing Methods
On cotton wool: The classic classroom method. Place on damp cotton wool and watch roots and shoots appear.
In soil: For larger plants with more leaves.
On windowsills: Grow year-round indoors in any container.
Succession sowing: Sow small amounts every week for continuous supply.
Harvesting
Cut when 5-10cm tall with scissors. Cress does not regrow after cutting, so sow fresh batches regularly. It bolts quickly in warm weather – best for cool seasons or indoor growing.
