Viola cornuta Large Flow. Monarch Mixed (Viola cornuta)
Tougher than pansies: More heat and cold tolerant
More flowers: Smaller but many more blooms
Longer season: Blooms later into summer
The Superior Pansy Alternative
Horned violets (violas) are pansies’ tougher cousins. The flowers are smaller but far more numerous, and plants tolerate both heat and cold better. Many gardeners prefer violas for their longer season of bloom and more graceful appearance.
Violas vs Pansies
Flower size: Violas smaller, pansies larger.
Number of flowers: Violas produce many more blooms.
Heat tolerance: Violas handle summer heat better.
Perennial tendency: Violas often return year after year.
Edible Like Pansies
Viola flowers are equally edible with the same mild, slightly sweet flavor. The smaller size makes them especially nice for decorating individual desserts and for floating in drinks.
Growing Violas
Grow like pansies but expect a longer season. In mild climates, violas often behave as short-lived perennials, returning for several years. They self-sow readily. Shear back if they become leggy in summer heat; they will regrow.
