Cottage garden classic: Towering spires of spotted bells

Beautiful but Deadly

WARNING: All parts of foxglove are highly toxic. Ingestion can be fatal. Do not plant where children or pets might encounter it. Wash hands after handling.

Foxglove is stunningly beautiful – tall spires of spotted, tubular flowers in pink, purple, white, and cream. But this beauty comes with danger. The cardiac glycosides that make it valuable medicine are deadly in uncontrolled doses.

Medical Importance

Foxglove gave us digitalis, which revolutionized treatment of heart failure. William Withering discovered its use in 1785 after learning it from a folk healer. Synthetic versions are now preferred, but the plant’s contribution to medicine is enormous.

The Folklore

The name “foxglove” may come from “folk’s glove” – referring to fairy folk. The spotted patterns inside the flowers were said to be fairy fingerprints. Other names include “dead man’s bells” and “witches’ gloves” – hinting at its deadly nature.

Growing Foxgloves

Foxgloves are biennials – they grow leaves the first year and flower the second. Plant in partial shade in moist, rich soil. Allow to self-sow for a permanent colony. They naturalize beautifully in woodland gardens. Keep away from children and pets.
