Strawberry Grandian F1 (Fragaria x ananassa)
The garden strawberry: Larger fruit than wild types
Three types: June-bearing, everbearing, and day-neutral
Nothing beats homegrown: Vine-ripened flavor cannot be bought
The Garden Favorite
Garden strawberries are the most popular fruit for home growing – and with good reason. A vine-ripened strawberry, still warm from the sun, bears little resemblance to the hard, flavorless specimens shipped to supermarkets. Homegrown strawberries are a revelation.
Understanding Strawberry Types
June-bearing: One large crop in late spring. Largest berries, best for preserving.
Everbearing: Two crops – spring and fall. Smaller berries but extended harvest.
Day-neutral: Continuous production throughout the season. Best for small gardens wanting steady supply.
Growing Success
Full sun: At least 6 hours of direct sun for sweet berries.
Good drainage: Strawberries rot in soggy soil.
Pinch first-year flowers: Removing flowers the first year builds stronger plants for bigger harvests later.
Mulch: Straw mulch keeps berries clean and retains moisture.
Replace plants: Productivity declines after 3-4 years; start fresh with runners or new plants.
