Description

Mayweed (Matricaria chamomilla)

World’s favorite herbal tea: Over 1 million cups drunk daily

Gentle enough for babies: Safe and soothing for all ages

Garden apple scent: The name means “ground apple” in Greek

The Universal Soother

Chamomile is one of the most beloved herbs in the world. Its gentle, apple-like fragrance and soothing properties have made it a household remedy for thousands of years. The Egyptians dedicated it to their sun god Ra. Today, chamomile tea is drunk for relaxation worldwide.

Harvesting and Drying

When to harvest: Pick flowers when the white petals begin to curve backward, just before the yellow center dome starts to hollow. This is when essential oil content is highest.

How to dry: Spread flowers in a single layer on screens or paper. Dry in a warm, dark place with good air circulation. Flowers are ready when they feel papery. Store in airtight containers away from light.

Making Perfect Chamomile Tea

Use 1-2 teaspoons of dried flowers per cup. Pour freshly boiled water over the flowers. Cover (important – it traps the volatile oils) and steep for 5-10 minutes. Strain and sweeten with honey if desired.

Traditional Uses

Sleep and relaxation: Chamomile is one of the most proven herbal relaxants. A cup before bed promotes restful sleep without morning grogginess.

Digestive comfort: Chamomile soothes stomach upset, gas, and cramping. It is gentle enough for babies – chamomile tea has been given to colicky infants for generations.

Skin care: Chamomile reduces inflammation and promotes healing. Use cooled tea as a compress for skin irritations, or add to bathwater for an overall soothing effect.

Growing Chamomile

German chamomile (this species) is an annual that self-sows readily. Roman chamomile is a perennial ground cover. Both make excellent tea. German chamomile grows taller and produces more flowers. Sow directly in spring in a sunny spot with average soil. Once established, it returns year after year from self-sown seeds.
