The Celery Substitute Supreme

Lovage tastes like celery – but intensely so. A single leaf does the work of several celery stalks. This makes lovage invaluable when you need celery flavor but do not have the space to grow celery, which is notoriously demanding.

Using Every Part

Leaves: Add sparingly to soups, stews, and stocks. A little goes a long way.

Stems: Hollow stems can be used as straws for Bloody Marys – they add flavor as you sip!

Seeds: Use like celery seed in bread, crackers, and pickles.

Roots: The thick roots can be cooked as a vegetable, though this sacrifices the plant.

Culinary Applications

Stocks and soups: Add a leaf or two for depth. Essential in traditional European cooking.

Potato dishes: Lovage and potatoes are a classic combination.

Salads: Very young, tender leaves can be added sparingly to salads.

Growing Lovage

Lovage is a giant perennial that can reach 2 meters tall. One plant is usually more than enough for any household. It prefers rich, moist soil and partial shade. Cut back hard in summer to encourage fresh growth. Plants live for many years and are virtually indestructible.
