Phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia)
Bee paradise: One of the very best plants for bees
Green manure: Excellent cover crop that improves soil
Unique blue flowers: Unusual fern-like foliage with curled blooms
The Ultimate Bee Plant
Phacelia is considered one of the very best plants for honeybees and native bees. The flowers produce abundant nectar over a long season. Beekeepers specifically plant phacelia to support their hives. The blue, curled flower clusters are covered with bees when in bloom.
Cover Crop Benefits
Quick coverage: Fast-growing plants suppress weeds effectively.
Soil improvement: Deep roots break up compacted soil.
Organic matter: Plants add biomass when turned under.
Pollinator support: Flowers feed bees while improving your soil.
Growing Tips
Direct sow in spring or fall. Fast growing – flowers in about 8 weeks from seed. Tolerates poor soil. Not winter hardy but self-sows readily. Turn under before plants set seed when using as green manure, or let flower for the bees.
