The Dramatic Tassel Flower
Love-lies-bleeding produces some of the most dramatic flowers in the garden – long, rope-like tassels of deep red or chartreuse that can reach 60cm in length. The effect is striking and unusual, making it a conversation piece wherever it grows.
Edible Ancient Grain
Amaranth was a staple food of the Aztecs. The tiny seeds are highly nutritious – high in protein, fiber, and minerals, and completely gluten-free. Let some plants mature and harvest the seeds by shaking the dried flower heads into a container.
Using the Leaves
Young amaranth leaves are excellent cooked as a spinach substitute. They are popular in Caribbean, African, and Asian cuisines. High in vitamins and minerals, they are a nutritious addition to the diet.
Growing Tips
Direct sow after last frost in full sun. Amaranth loves heat and tolerates drought. Plants can reach 1-1.5 meters tall. For larger tassels, grow in rich soil with regular water. Self-sows readily.
