Sweet Marjoram (Majorana Hortensis) (Majorana hortensis)
Oregano’s sweeter cousin: More delicate and floral
Best added last: Delicate flavor destroyed by long cooking
Marriage herb: Traditional symbol of happiness in ancient Greece
The Gentle Oregano
Sweet marjoram is closely related to oregano but with a gentler, sweeter, more floral character. While oregano can dominate, marjoram blends and harmonizes. It is the sophisticated sibling in the oregano family.
Culinary Uses
Add at the end: Unlike oregano, marjoram’s delicate flavor is destroyed by long cooking. Add in the last few minutes.
Meat dishes: Excellent with chicken, pork, and veal. Traditional in German sausages.
Vegetables: Wonderful with beans, carrots, and squash.
Eggs: One of the best herbs for omelets and scrambled eggs.
Herb blends: Key component of Herbes de Provence and many Italian blends.
Marjoram vs Oregano
Marjoram is sweeter, more floral, and more delicate. Oregano is bolder, more pungent, and stands up to heat better. In a pinch, you can substitute one for the other, but the results will differ.
Growing Tips
Marjoram is technically a perennial but often grown as an annual because it is tender. In mild climates it survives winter; elsewhere, take cuttings or grow indoors. It prefers well-drained soil and full sun. Harvest before flowering for best flavor.
