Onion -Bunching Long White Ishikura (Allium fistulosum)
Perennial onion: Plant once, harvest for years
No bulb needed: Harvest just the green tops anytime
Cold hardy: Survives winter where regular onions fail
The Eternal Spring Onion
Welsh onions (despite the name, they are from Asia) are perennial plants that keep producing year after year. Unlike regular spring onions that must be replanted, these form clumps that expand over time. Simply harvest what you need and the plant keeps growing.
Using Welsh Onions
Use Welsh onions anywhere you would use spring onions or scallions – sliced over noodles, in stir-fries, in salads, as garnish. Both white and green parts are edible. The flavor is milder than regular onions.
In Asian cuisine: Essential in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cooking. Slice thin for garnishing, cut into lengths for stir-frying.
Grilled: Grill whole bunches until charred and serve with grilled meats.
Growing Tips
Welsh onions are incredibly easy and forgiving. They tolerate poor soil, drought, and cold. Plant once and divide the clumps every few years to maintain vigor. They can also be grown in pots on a sunny windowsill for year-round harvest.
