Ornamental Rhubarb – Not for the Kitchen
Important: This is ornamental rhubarb, different from culinary rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum). Do not eat this species – grow it for its dramatic appearance only.
Garden Value
Ornamental rhubarb is grown for its spectacular foliage. The enormous, deeply veined leaves can reach impressive sizes, creating a bold architectural statement in the garden. It is stunning near water features or as a specimen plant.
Culinary Rhubarb is Different
If you want rhubarb for pies and crumbles, grow Rheum rhabarbarum or Rheum x hybridum – the true culinary rhubarb species. Even with culinary rhubarb, only the stalks are edible; the leaves contain oxalic acid and are toxic.
Growing Ornamental Rhubarb
Plant in moist, rich soil in partial shade. The huge leaves need protection from wind. Water generously – these are moisture-loving plants. The dramatic flower spikes can reach 2 meters tall. Makes a stunning focal point in large gardens.
