Snapdragon Tall mixed (Antirrhinum majus)
Dragon flowers: Squeeze the sides and the “mouth” opens
Cool weather lover: Blooms best in spring and fall
Kids love them: The snapping action is endlessly entertaining
The Dragon Flower
Snapdragons have fascinated children (and adults!) for generations. Squeeze the sides of the flower and it opens like a dragon’s mouth – release and it snaps shut. This simple pleasure never gets old, and the flowers are beautiful too.
Cool Weather Champions
Snapdragons thrive in cooler temperatures. In mild climates, they bloom through winter. Elsewhere, they shine in spring and fall but struggle in summer heat. Many gardeners plant them in fall for early spring bloom.
Cutting Garden Stars
Tall snapdragon varieties are excellent cut flowers:
Long vase life: Last over a week in water.
Vertical accent: The spiky form adds height to arrangements.
Every color: Available in virtually every color except true blue.
Growing Snapdragons
Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before last frost, or direct sow. Pinch seedlings to encourage bushier growth. Deadhead regularly for continuous bloom. In mild climates, they often survive winter and return, or self-sow. Rust disease can be a problem – look for resistant varieties.
