Cobaea Scandens (Cobaea scandens)
Fastest annual vine: Can grow 6 meters in one season
Color-changing flowers: Open green, mature to purple
Large cup-and-saucer blooms: Unusual and elegant
The Cathedral Bells
Cup and saucer vine produces remarkable flowers – large bells sitting on flat, saucer-like calyces. The flowers open pale green and gradually deepen to rich purple. This color transformation happens over several days, so plants display multiple colors simultaneously.
Incredible Growth
This vine is spectacularly vigorous – expect 6 meters or more of growth in a single season. It needs strong support. The tendrils grip anything they touch, covering arbors, pergolas, and fences quickly.
Late to Start, Long to Finish
Cup and saucer vine is slow to get going – be patient in spring. But once it starts, growth is explosive. It blooms from midsummer until frost, often still flowering when everything else has finished.
Growing Tips
Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost – the long season is necessary. Plant seeds on edge to prevent rotting. Needs warm soil to take off. Full sun and rich soil produce the most flowers. In mild climates, can become perennial.
