Dahlia var. Unwins Hybrids mixed (Dahlia variabilis)
Incredible diversity: Thousands of varieties from tiny to dinner-plate sized
Tubers store energy: Dig and store for next year
Late season glory: Peak bloom in late summer and fall
The Queen of Late Summer
Dahlias are unmatched for late season color and drama. From tiny pompoms to dinner-plate giants, from simple singles to intricate cactus forms, the variety is endless. Serious collectors grow hundreds of varieties; casual gardeners can enjoy just a few.
Flower Forms
Single: Open centers with one row of petals.
Decorative: Fully double with flat petals.
Cactus: Rolled, pointed petals.
Ball/Pompom: Round, tight flowers.
Dinner plate: Giants up to 30cm across.
Overwintering Tubers
In cold climates, dig tubers after frost kills the tops. Let dry for a day, brush off soil, and store in a cool, dry place in peat moss or vermiculite. Check periodically for rot. Replant after last frost.
Growing Tips
Plant tubers after last frost, 10-15cm deep. Stake tall varieties early. Pinch growing tips for bushier plants. Feed regularly for best blooms. Remove spent flowers to encourage more.
