Dramatic Blue Spires
WARNING: All parts of larkspur are toxic. Do not eat. Keep away from livestock and children.
Larkspur brings dramatic vertical blue (and pink, white, purple) spires to the garden. As an annual, it is easier to grow than perennial delphiniums and blooms quickly from seed. The name comes from the spur on the back of each flower.
Cutting Garden Essential
Larkspur is outstanding for cutting:
Long vase life: Cut when lower flowers open and buds will continue opening in the vase.
Dries beautifully: Hang upside down in a dark place. Colors remain vibrant for years.
Height for arrangements: The tall spires add vertical drama to bouquets.
Growing Larkspur
Sow in fall for spring bloom (in mild climates) or early spring for summer bloom. Larkspur prefers cool weather and struggles in summer heat. Direct sow – it dislikes transplanting. Support tall varieties with stakes or grow through a grid. Allow self-sowing for return each year.
