Valerian (Valeriana officinalis)

The Sleep Herb

Valerian has been used for sleep and anxiety for at least 2,000 years. It is one of the most well-researched herbal sedatives, shown in studies to improve sleep quality without the hangover effects of many sleep medications. The root is the medicinal part.

The Smell Factor

Dried valerian root has a distinctive smell – often described as dirty socks or musty cheese. Most people find it unpleasant. Cats, however, find it intoxicating – it affects them like catnip, causing rolling, rubbing, and general feline bliss.

Medicinal Uses

For sleep: Take 30-60 minutes before bed. It helps you fall asleep and improves sleep quality.

For anxiety: Can be taken during the day for mild anxiety, though it may cause drowsiness.

Combination: Often combined with hops or lemon balm for enhanced effect.

Note: Valerian works better with regular use over time. Effects may not be immediate.

Growing Valerian

Valerian is a tall, hardy perennial reaching 1.5 meters with clusters of fragrant pink or white flowers. It prefers moist soil and tolerates partial shade. Harvest roots in autumn after the second year. The flowers are lovely and attract many pollinators.
