Beyond Orange

While golden orange is classic, California poppies now come in cream, yellow, pink, red, and purple. Some have ruffled or semi-double flowers. But the original orange remains most vigorous and reliable.

Drought Adaptation

California poppies are adapted to the state’s Mediterranean climate – winter rain, summer drought. They actually perform better without summer irrigation. The foliage goes dormant in heat but revives with cooler weather or rain.

Growing Tips

Direct sow in fall (mild climates) or early spring. They dislike transplanting. Poor, well-drained soil is perfect – rich soil makes leaves, not flowers. Self-sow prolifically. May be short-lived in humid climates.
