The Sunshine Herb

St. John’s Wort is one of the best-studied herbal medicines, with considerable evidence for its effectiveness in treating mild to moderate depression. Named for blooming around the feast of St. John (June 24), it has been used for mental wellbeing for centuries.

Important Warnings

Sun sensitivity: St. John’s Wort can cause severe sunburn and skin reactions. Avoid intense sun exposure while using it.

Drug interactions: This herb interacts with MANY medications, including birth control pills, blood thinners, HIV medications, and antidepressants. Always consult a healthcare provider before use.

Not for severe depression: Effective for mild to moderate depression, but severe depression requires professional treatment.

Traditional Uses

Beyond mood support, St. John’s Wort oil (made by infusing flowers in olive oil) has been used topically for wounds, burns, and nerve pain for centuries. The oil turns brilliant red – a signature of the plant.

Growing St. John’s Wort

This is an easy perennial that thrives in poor soil and drought. The cheerful yellow flowers bloom in midsummer. It spreads readily – sometimes too readily. Hold the leaves up to light and you will see tiny translucent dots (oil glands) that give it the name “perforatum.”
