Thunbergia Alata / Black-Eyed-Susan (Thunbergia alata)
Cheerful black eyes: Dark centers give the name
Blooms in part shade: Unlike most flowering vines
Perfect for containers: Manageable vine size
The Smiling Vine
Black-eyed Susan vine is one of the friendliest flowers – the orange or yellow flowers with dark centers seem to smile from every angle. It is less vigorous than morning glory, making it perfect for containers and small spaces.
Versatile Growing
Climbing: Provide strings or small trellis – reaches 1.5-2 meters.
Trailing: Beautiful cascading from hanging baskets.
Groundcover: Allowed to sprawl, creates colorful carpet.
Color Varieties
While orange with black eye is classic, varieties now include yellow, white, and salmon, some with or without the dark eye. Mix colors for a cheerful display.
Growing Tips
Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Unlike most vines, it tolerates partial shade. Keep well-watered – it wilts in drought. Blooms continuously until frost. Can be overwintered indoors in cold climates.
