Filipendula ulmaria
Botanical Family: Rosaceae (Rose family)
Aspirin’s ancestor: The original source of salicylic acid
Gentle stomach healer: Anti-inflammatory that soothes rather than irritates
Sacred herb: One of the Druids’ most holy plants
Botanical Description
Filipendula ulmaria is an elegant perennial growing 60-120cm tall in moist meadows and along waterways. The pinnate leaves have distinctive pairs of large leaflets interspersed with tiny ones, and a large terminal leaflet. The undersides are silvery-white. Fluffy, creamy-white flower clusters appear in summer, releasing one of nature’s most beautiful fragrances – sweet, almond-like, with hints of honey and vanilla.
Medicinal Actions
Primary actions: Anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antacid, astringent, diaphoretic, diuretic.
Traditional uses: Revered by the Druids as one of three most sacred herbs. Used for digestive complaints, fevers, and pain. The name “aspirin” actually derives from meadowsweet’s old botanical name (Spiraea).
Key distinction: Unlike synthetic aspirin which can irritate the stomach, meadowsweet contains a natural balance of compounds that soothe and protect the digestive lining while providing anti-inflammatory effects.
Body Systems Affected
Digestive: Soothes heartburn, gastritis, and ulcers. Reduces excess acidity.
Musculoskeletal: Anti-inflammatory for arthritis, rheumatism, and general pain.
Urinary: Mild diuretic; traditionally used for urinary tract support.
Immune: Diaphoretic – promotes sweating during fevers.
Safety Information
Salicylate sensitivity: Contains salicylates – avoid if allergic to aspirin.
Children: Avoid in children under 16 with viral infections (theoretical Reye’s syndrome risk).
Pregnancy: Avoid in pregnancy due to salicylate content.
Drug interactions: May enhance effects of blood thinners and other salicylate drugs.
Generally safe: When used appropriately, meadowsweet is considered very safe and gentle.
