Historic craft plant: Used for millennia worldwide
Vigorous vines: Need strong support
Bottle Gourd
Bottle gourds are one of humanity’s oldest cultivated plants – the dried shells have served as containers, utensils, and musical instruments for thousands of years. Growing your own connects you to this ancient tradition.
Using Bottle Gourds
Young fruits: Edible when immature – cook like squash.
Dried gourds: Clean, dry thoroughly, and use as containers, birdhouses, or craft projects.
Important: Mature gourds are not edible – only young, tender fruits.
Growing Tips
Plant after last frost in warm soil. Vigorous vines need strong support. Long season – 120+ days to maturity. Let gourds dry on vine as long as possible. Finish drying in dry, well-ventilated area.
