The Lucky Green Bells
Bells of Ireland produces tall spikes of apple-green, bell-shaped calyces surrounding tiny white flowers. The unusual green color makes them invaluable for flower arranging – they add structure and complement other colors beautifully.
Not Actually Irish
Despite the common name, this plant comes from western Asia, not Ireland. The name refers to the green color and bell shape, which reminded someone of Irish green and bells. It has become associated with St. Patrick’s Day and good luck.
For Arrangements
Fresh: Cut when bells are fully developed. Long vase life.
Dried: Hang upside down; bells turn cream/tan but retain their shape.
Tip: Remove leaves for a cleaner look in arrangements.
Growing Tips
Direct sow in early spring – needs cool soil to germinate. Can be tricky to start; some gardeners refrigerate seeds before planting. Full sun, well-drained soil. Plants reach 60-90cm tall and may need support.
