The Ornamental Catnip
Catmint is catnip’s more ornamental cousin. While cats respond to it (though often less intensely than true catnip), its real value is the long-lasting display of blue-purple flowers and neat, mounding habit. It is one of the easiest, most reliable perennials.
Nearly Foolproof
Catmint tolerates heat, drought, poor soil, and neglect. It shrugs off deer and rabbits. Diseases and pests rarely bother it. For a reliable, attractive perennial that performs in difficult conditions, catmint is hard to beat.
The Cut-Back Secret
After the first flush of flowers, cut plants back by half. They will rebloom within weeks. This can be done 2-3 times per season, extending bloom from late spring through fall.
Growing Tips
Full sun to light shade, average to poor soil. Excellent drainage is important – catmint dislikes wet winter soil. Perfect for edges, borders, and mass plantings. Aromatic foliage is pleasant when brushed against.
