Nigella Damascena Persian Jewels Mixed (Nigella damascena)
Mystery flower: Surrounded by ferny bracts like mist
Dramatic seed pods: Ornamental long after flowers fade
Related to black cumin: Seeds edible but different flavor
Love in a Mist
Nigella is an enchanting flower surrounded by a haze of thread-like bracts that give it its romantic name – Love-in-a-Mist. The delicate blue, white, or pink flowers seem to float in green mist. The inflated seed pods that follow are equally ornamental.
Three Seasons of Beauty
Flowers: Delicate, ethereal blooms in late spring and early summer.
Fresh seed pods: Striking striped balloons that follow the flowers.
Dried pods: Last for years in dried arrangements. Simply let them dry on the plant.
The Seeds
Nigella seeds are related to black cumin (Nigella sativa) but this ornamental species has milder flavor. The seeds can be used as a spice, though true black cumin is preferred for culinary use. The name “Love-in-a-Mist” likely refers to the way the seeds hide inside the decorative pods.
Growing Love-in-a-Mist
Direct sow in fall or early spring – nigella dislikes transplanting. It prefers cooler temperatures and fades in summer heat. Allow plants to self-sow and they will return year after year, creating natural-looking drifts. Excellent for cottage gardens and cutting.
