The Butternut Family
Cucurbita moschata includes butternut squash and its relatives – considered by many to be the sweetest of all winter squashes. The smooth, tan skin and deep orange flesh are familiar from countless autumn dishes. These squash store exceptionally well.

Smooth texture: Purées beautifully for soups and sauces.
Easy preparation: The bell shape makes it easier to peel and seed than bumpy squashes.
Long storage: Properly cured, keeps 3-6 months.
Growing Tips
This species handles heat better than other winter squashes. Plant after soil is warm. Give vines plenty of room to spread. Harvest when skin is hard and stem begins to dry. Cure in warm, dry conditions for 2 weeks before storage.
